Applied research institute joins POWERLINK user organization

The Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) is the newest member of the Ethernet POWERLINK Standardization Group (EPSG). Having successfully implemented the real-time protocol during international research projects in the field of high-performance vision, AIT will be ramping up its involvement with POWERLINK and assuming an active role in the ongoing development of the technology.

The AIT has already completed an extensive interface standardization project using POWERLINK in the field of security printing. "Our evaluation showed that POWERLINK met the requirements of our commercial and industrial partners and customers with regard to high performance and maximum openness," re-ports Andreas Vrabl, Head of AIT's Center for Vision, Automation & Control. A transmission speed of 100 Mbit/s and a synchronization accuracy of +/- 100 ns provide plenty of performance to implement even the most demanding image processing tasks performed by advanced industrial machinery.

At the AIT's Center for Vision, Automation & Control, around 50 experts collab-orate with partners from the industrial, scientific and public sectors to research key technologies such as 3D image processing and optical quality inspection. Its 1,300 employees make the AIT the largest non-university research institution in Austria. With eight specialized centers, the AIT is an invaluable source of research and development expertise for Austria's industries.
