EPSG presents companion specification for OPC UA and POWERLINK

At embedded world, the Ethernet POWERLINK Standardization Group (EPSG) will demonstrate how interface-free communication will soon pro-vide seamless connectivity from the sensor layer to the ERP layer and into the cloud. This is based on the new companion specification, which describes how payload data is exchanged between the POWERLINK and OPC UA protocols.

Collaborative efforts between the EPSG and OPC Foundation date back to a joint memorandum of understanding announced at the 2015 SPS IPC Drives exhibition. Technical teams from the two organizations have since been working on the companion specification, which has now been completed and will soon be published on the EPSG website.

Solution for the IIoT

At its booth (Hall 3A, Booth 133) the EPSG will be demonstrating how infor-mation from a POWERLINK slave can be transferred directly to higher-level systems or other areas of a plant. This clears one of the greatest hurdles standing in the way of the Industrial Internet of Things: the discontinuity between IT and automation systems.
Another highlight of the EPSG booth will be a demonstration showing how POWERLINK can be implemented with CODESYS on a Zynq 7000 from Xilinx. EPSG technology partners will also be presenting integration solutions for POWERLINK masters and slaves as well as for openSAFETY nodes.
